A couple of things:
(1)Do we have evidence from other macro language
families of a term designating them in the same sense
as our elusive IE term might self-identify the IEs?
(2)What makes us think that the pre-proto-pre etc etc
IEs would have thought of themselves as a recognizable
people, an "us" vs. "they"? I seriously doubt there
ever was such a common consciousness.
