It is even attested in older texts (17th c. or so).
With the meaning "family." I'm saying this based on
vague memory (unfortunately I don't have any book
at hand to confirm this).
OTOH, for the meaning "woman," along with standard
femeie, there are the regional variants fimeie and
fumeie. [fe'me-je; fi'me-je; fu'me-je]
