This is Pokorny's *mezg-[1] 'plunge, subMERGe', different from the *meu-
that seems to underlie <muscus>. The Latin cognates are <mergo:,
mergere> and <mergus> 'merganser'. Pokorny also mentions the Uralic
connection.
