Because what happens in one language doesn't have to happen in another,
and this is certainly true of the phonological clipping of grammatical
words. The Germans still have a final velar in <ich>, while the English
dropped it ages ago. In fact, _whatever_ the (Eastern) Balts did to
their "egos", the Slavs obviously didn't go the same way.
