Proto-East-Baltic, that is, eh? Couldn't it be simply an irregular
reduction of a frequently used grammatical function word (*é:z'aN >
*é:z' > *ez'), not unlike jaz > ja(:) in Slavic or Old English <ic> >
Middle English <i>?
