Re: Sulán's and Seldeslachts' report on Hung. <kan> used for
the general meaning "male" and "big, large".

Yesterday, I got a reply (through that intermediary who knows the
entire Szamos river area) from a Mr Kiss, moderator of a NG
dedicated to the Hungarian language (hun.nyelv).

He says: undoubtedly, the generally used word is <hím> [hi:m]
"male." <kan> is specialized ("boar"); occasionally, he heard it
also as referred to dogs.

As for the idea "male" = "big, large" / "female" = "small, little,"
he went on to say (with a "wow!" :) that a population using this
kind of talk must be highly isolated from the rest of the world.
But --he added-- he has never heard of something like that, although
he's not a completely newbie in this domain.

(Unfortunately, he said nothing re. B. $ulán and Seldeslachts.)
