I wouldn't be surprised if its origin were mixed, both Latin and Slavic,
as in Romanian (to make sure, a careful analysis of extensive material
would be necessary). Sice Slavic *-arjI is itself ultimately of Latin
origin (via East Germanic but also via early Romance and/or West
Germanic), and has more recently been used to substitute <-arius> in
direct loans from Latin, all roads lead to Rome anyway. The Slavic
suffix was originally added to nouns (it still wasn't a typical
agent-noun suffix in OCS), but its productivity has increased in the
course of time, like that of English -er (which has the same origin;
note mill-er, villag-er, etc.).
