I think that Albanian adjective <i madh> 'big' is derived from o-
grade form *mog- with regular evolution of /*o/ > /a/ and /*g/>/dh/.
This form, to my view, was preserved in some place name. like
Mogilla 'big village', probably the oldest one, and Magure 'larg
village', probably more recent one. I think that <mogilla> is an
extend form of *mog-, attested also in South Slavic languages,
through metathesis m - g > g - m, as gomila 'heap, pile (of stones,
etc)'.
I hope that these fact could enlight Romanian <mare>, as an
elliptical form of <mogilla >> ma(gi)lla or <ma(gu)re>> mare.
