To the other George:

Samuil never called himself anything of the kind (nor was he
called by others). Same about Vaptsarov and many other
Bulgarian historical figures, who are now subject to
psychoanalysis by the Macedonian "historians". The latter state
all these people were Macedonians, but called themselves
Bulgarians, because being Bulgarian was more prestigious (or
some fabricated nonsense of the kind).
