How about this hypothetical scenario, then:

1) Reconquista (halfways?) in linguistic north-south stripes

2) The whole north coast goes -o > -u, -Vn > V~ etc (Basque
substrate? French influence?)

3) Conservative Castillan goes north (after Madrid becomes capital)
and breaks the north coast into two halves

?
