Ok, I was probably calquing on Russian "zapreshchaetsja". Still, maybe the
Hundred Acre Woods was in the Eastern Poland, and the sign was put up by
some Russified civil servant...

I had some more suggestions for WSTEP BRON (WSTEP BRONI ZLY PIES, WSTEP
BRONIONY PRZEZ ZLEGO POLICJANTA), but I can't get any of them past my wife.

I conclude that the sign must have broken in three places, and the parts
reading ZA and IONY were lost, while WSTEP and BRON were pieced together.
