It seems that it was first written down in the 14th
c., but there are many subsequent versions, which
differ from one another. The original text by
Residettin was written in Persian. This is, of course,
not history but epic, and must therefore be used with
extreme caution. Like the bilini, it was reworked and
rethought many times, and contains many layers. Oguz
Khan himself is apparently a "composite" figure, with
elements of Attila and other great royal figures.
Which version of the Oguzname did you cite? [Dede
Korkut is a different work, first written down in the
16th c.. but incorporating elements of the Oguzname]
Frankly there is no way of proving that the reference
to "Ulak" is much older than the 14th c.******
