About Albanian "pemë" it is seen as a loan from Latin. The latin po:mu-
is from the root *po-emom where we have already an "e". But I guess
Abdullah can show more corespondences of Latin /o:/ > Alb /e/. The
meaning of the word is "Obstbaum, Frucht, Obst" but is too
simply,"tree". Por this see rom. poamã (from pome or from poma ?)=
Frucht. The root *po-emom meant "Gepflücktes, Abgenomen.
And I have nothing against a loan since in Rom. the another word for
"tree" is "copac". The fact the Germanic family is stil not cleared
(Germ. baum; Eng. beam, Dutch: boom, Ahd "boum") make the situation more
interesant.
Here again, we observe that just the root is loaned. The Latin own
derivatives show no trace in Romanian, all derivatives being made from
"pom". The latin derivatives have been a lot and it is expected to be
there in Rom. some of these derivatives too since Romanian is a language
which is one and the same as the latin spoked without break :
pomus, pometum, pomosus,pomusculum, pomifer, pomarius, pomariolum,
pomatio, pomonalis
What do we have? Nothing of these derivatives, but just the needed
"pom-". Does it looks as "inherited" or as a loan?
