English : to warp
German : werfen
Schwed : värpa
Russian : vérba
Is the Albanian "vërvit" too a cognate here?
The root should be IE *uer-
The IE root *uer- should have had the meaning initialy as "drehen" and
from this root there are a lot of derivatives in several semantic fields
beside "to warp"
about insects/animal
Latin "vermis", Old Russian "vermie", German "wurm"; English "worm";
about wind:
German wirbel; Sanskrit "varjati", "vartati", Rom. "invârti", Russian
"vertet", Latin "vertere", Lith. "verpti", Greek "rembein", etc.
I will put into this serie the Rom. word "zvârli"= to warp. DEX shows
for this word the Serb.Kr. "vrljiti" and Bulgarian
"hvarliam".
There is too the verb "zvârcoli" (to spasm) where DEX shows comparative
the Bulgarian "vargaljam" and a small, very quick fish called "zvârlugã"
with unknown etymology.
Question: I am interested if anyone has a idea about a suffix as "-uga"
or "-luga".
regards,
alex
