Look for "tarkan zhupan" and "ban," as titles/ranks
within the Bulgar (proto-Bulgarian) ruling class. BTW,
quasi-contemporary with the Merowingian & Carolingian
epochs of the Frankish Empire.
(main idea in that thread, on sci.lang,
sci.arcaeology, sci.anthropology: these terms might
have had Iranic or Caucasoid origin.)

I was/am in contact with Vassil [ie Mr. Karloukovski; Thank You again Vassil
for all your help! It is much appreciated].
The conclusion: the title 'BAN' has been attested among the bulgars with
certainty since the XIV century. See also Vassil's e-mail to cybalist from
27.02.
As for the writing of Mr. Peter Dobrev, who is the only one listing "BAN" as
titles/ranks within the proto-Bulgarian ruling class, unfortunately, he do
not respond to several e-mails in which PROVES for his affirmations [only on
BAN] are asked [nicely!] and the source for his info/quotations/etc. for
these are also asked [nicely!], what should I say? As far as I know, he is
"Professor in Ancient ECONOMIC History at Institute of Economics Bulgarian
Academy of Sciences". Is he a reliable source of info? And IF he is, then
who_what_where_when_5W .?
But as far as I understand, Mr. Dobrev is a pioneer .
