> Oh, here is a lot of phonetic considerations that I do not fully
understand. My view against the genitival origin of most thematic
nouns,is based upon its use and upon the semantics of thematic stems.
But, I will admin one thing: Glen`s prosess of redefining genitives,
of course, is a valid process, and I admit that some thematic nouns
probably had that origin. And I also admit that some
athematic/thematic pairs point to such an origine.
But those pairs are too few, I think, to prove the genitival origine
of most thematic nouns. If every thematic noun comes from a genitive
of an athematic noun, then nearly every thematic noun should have an
athematic pair. And the meaning of the thematic noun/ajective should
be such that it fits into the definition "something that is
assosiated with the thing denoted by the athematic noun". And this
pairing should be a regular feature of every branch of IE.
Therefore I think that the thematic vowel originates from something
that has withstood the zero-grade process.
I have propsed that Glen`s penultimate-stress theory is too simple. I
think that IE before the zero grade-periode may have had
nous/adjectives with fixed stress at a stem-final vowel. If that is
thrue, the zero-grade prosess would authomaticly produse a thematic
and an athematic declention.
As for the word wlkWos the developement would be like this. welkWòs>
wlkWòs. Then a shift of accent from the ultimate to the first
syllable would give wlKWos.
