Are there cognates in other IE languages, or is Gk. 'autos' an
orphan?
Watkins leaves it at the Greek. The online Pokorny under root
131 AU- "that", "other" has Gk. 'au' "andreseits", "wiederum", and
then adds "Brugmann BSGW. 60, 23 a 2 reiht auch gr.[autos] - als
`von ihm aus' an; andere Deutungen s. bei Schwyzer Gr. Gr. I 613."
I don't quite understand the German "von ihm aus", but it seems a
reversal of meaning, and there appears to be a note of skepticism in
Pokorny's reference.
I'm still having zero success using Leiden's online Frisk Greek
etymologic dictionary.
