Subject: [tied] Thessalia's etymology: Thessalos/Phettalos

> What is the etymology of Thessalia? Thessalos has a dialectal variant Phettalos, what points to a *gWHe(ss)alos. "ss" may have many origins.

Also Thettalos (Attic) and Petthalos (Thessalian). Not all sources of <-ss-/-tt-> are likely in this case. For example, *-Ts- would have given Attic -s-, and *gWHet- is not a plausible PIE root. <pettHalos> suggests an original root with two aspirated stops. How about *gWHedH-j-, from the 'wish, pray, expect' (as in Gk. potHos, -tHestos, etc.)?
