sclavus-slav

If yes please ignore the question, I will try to find out in the
archives. If not is the question:
Why is considered that the Latin "sclavus" to be the denomination for
"slavs"?
So far I know, the word "sclavus" appears some time before the Slavs are
seen somewhere in the neighbourhood of Roman Empire.
