I think Camoes is based upon certain folk-etymologies linking Portugueses
cities to Greek legends or Biblical characters, like Lisbon - Lisboa
(Olisipona) < Ulysses; or Setubal from Thubal, Noah's grandson. In fact,
Dionysos had a son named Lysos (it's also his epithet), so this Lysos was
Latinized to Lusus, thus linked to Lusitania. I've never read "Os Lusiadas",
so I cannot give more details.
