And who eventually proved that the world wasn't flat?

I suppose you haven't seen or read anything by Ladefoged, but you don't hesitate to dismiss all that offhand. Such, I suppose, was also the attitude of those no-nonsense people who rejected the novel idea of a round Earth without examining the evidence, since their everyday experience already proved to their full satisfaction and beyond reasonable doubt that the Earth was as flat as a pancake, like the old experts had said.
