The OED makes it a diminutive in <-et> of <hog(g)> 'a swine
reared for slaughter; a name given to a sheep of a certain
age' (and other senses), found in a Latin context in 1350
and in English ca.1460. So far as I know, the etymology of
<hog> is unknown.
