Anyway, the rain-bringing aspects of dragons does seem to be a
widespread motif, particularly in east asia. Some eividence may point
to connecting this with the western and near eastern dragon as well,
but as of yet I have not found it conclusive. My objection is that
once you say dragons stand for "rain" and rain alone, then you are
forced to regard all other properties and motifs as "secondary"
or "later additions". How do we know what is the "core" motif which
defines the dragon, and which are just peripheral traits?
Other motifs, such as the dragon as a guardian of sacred treasure,
seem to go back a ways as well-Ladon and the Hesperides, the Golden
Fleece, etc. Other dragon-like composite monsters, not necessarily
dragons, protected ceremonial space for thousands of yeaers in
Mesopotamia etc.
The hero has been slaying the dragon long before christianity-Greek
myth, or go all the way back to the Enuma Elish when Marduk slew the
Mushushu dragon that Tiamat summoned. Of course some say Tiamat
herself was a dragon, and associated with waters, but these would be
the primordial salt-waters and not rainwater.
