Hi !
What about Albanian 'shteg'(gap, footpath) - also shtegtoj=migrate,
shtegtar=migrant ?
How is it related to German 'Steig' (steep track) ?

The root underlying both is PIE *steigH- 'climb, ascend, go up, stride'. English cognates include <stirrup> (OE sti:g-ra:p 'mounting-rope'), <stile> (< *stig-ila-) and <stair> (*staig-r-i:-). We discussed this root and its numerous reflexes in various branches some time ago, in a thread devoted to Gk. stikHos 'line, verse', if I remember aright. The Albanian word derives regularly from PIE *stoigHo-.
