According to the American Heritage Dictionary (online): English "god" and German "Gott" came from IE *gheu(@)-, "to call, invoke", suffixed zero-grade form *ghu-to-, "the invoked (one)". Pokorny's root is *g^hau- (#413). ~DaW~
