Dear Guillaume,
Indo-Iranian has a relatively wide range of reflexes of a word
reconstructible as *wéro:n ~ *wrré:n ~ *w(e)rn- 'ram'. The Old Indian
members of this word-family are <ura:, uran.aka-> 'sheep, ram';
Iranian has a constellation of forms derived from *varn(-aka)- and
*vara:n-a-. However, it is difficult to regard any of them as the
source of (northern) Slavic *baranU (at least if we assume a direct
loan), since despite the enticing similarity of sound the alleged
correspondence goes against the normal pattern of phonemic
substitution in Iranian loans in Slavic (neither the initial
consonant nor the following vowel looks right, so the match of *-
ra:na- : *-ranU is probably accidental).
