I thought you had a BA in linguistics. The _later_ Germanic languages had palatal umlaut in *xarja-. Check things like OE heremann-, OHG herimann-, or ON hermaĆ°r (-mann-) 'warrior', hermannligr 'gallant, warrior-like'.

Imagine that I should experience seeing an attested asterisked form.
The only attested example I can think of is Averell Harriman, and
that's rather late.
