the turks called them too valah. The valahs were not the first
european people the turks meet:)
More probably they got the name from bulgarians if not directly from
bizantins

what once again cofirm that for the slavians ears there was no big
difference between a romanian or a italian.Even today, as speakers of
non latin languages, we make hardly the difference between spanish,
romanian, italian and portugal language. I cannot say the same about
french laguage where the specific "thingies" in that language make it
imposible to confunde with the first 4.
In fact i guess this is too for a german or latin or english
speaker. If they hear checz or polish language, they will hardly make
the difference, thinking is the same language
