The Armenian word for "horse" is <ji> < *g^Hejos (OIA haya-). It must have been an epithet originally ("runner" or the like, grom the root *g^Hei-).

It's interesting that Armenian also has 'es' for donkey. Could the
German and Latin be related to this somehow so that the 'esel'
and 'es' come from something similar?
