The Dutch variant on "hello" is "hallo". I once heard this word came from
the English word "halloo" (= a cry to urge hunting dogs). My etymological
dictionary says it could possibly come from the Dutch navy term "haal op!"
("weigh [anchor]"). Other European languages have simular words. Like French
"all", German "hallo", Spanish "hola" or Swedish "hall".
