Apart from the typo (I meant: óbuolas), the source is Jens' article I
mentioned, and there I believe taken from Winter's original article
where the law formulated. I see Pokorny gives this as "westlit.".

That's probably a different word. Pokorny gives: Lith (Z^em.) smagùs
'schwer zu tragen oder zu ziehen', Latv. smag(r)s 'schwer von Gewicht,
lastend'. Related to Greek mógos "toil".
