With a choice between *a and *a:, yes, absolutely,
this is a purely HYPOTHETICAL one-vowel system with a pointless
length contrast. If you want something more realistic, get
rid of the colon on one of the vowels and change the letter to
something else.
Until you can find a real-world system of {*a, *a:} where a low/high
contrast is non-existant (not the case in Germanic, Hungarian, Slavic, etc.,
not even in the minimalist vowel systems of Abkhaz-Adhyghe),
your theory continues to be irrational pet-theory drivvel on the
same intellectual level as Patrick Ryan's Proto-Language psychosis.
