Old family traditions say

For luck, keep a needle or small piece of iron on hand.

Not just metal but iron or silver. In general, this is also to keep
bad things from happening or things from disappearing.

When one thinks about a passed relative a small rounded stone is
rubbed smooth then placed on their grave.

For the best luck a small rounded stone encased in an iron, or better
still silver, mount and worn.
