In most of Portugal (except possibly the North), Rio de Janeiro and
some other parts on the Brazilian coast, /s/ becomes /s^/ before a
voiceless consonant or in word-final position (e.g. /kaskais/ >
/kas^kais^/. Before a voiced consonant, we have /z^/ in the same area
(e.g. /mEzmu/ > /mEz^mu/). Written <x> and <ch> are pronounced /s^/
everywhere (except possibly in the North, where <ch> is /c^/).
