What monk is that, and what chronicle? It should be possible to check what form was used in the original and whether it is not the Anglophone translator who's responsible for bringing in the "Ruthenians". Anyway, by the 12th century the influence of Kievan Rus strengthening and protecting its communication lines with Byzantium was no doubt felt in Moldavia. The Kievan rulers at that time were Slavicised descendants of a former Scandinavian elite, converted to Orthodox Christianity.

I have a printed English translation of a 12th Cent. German monk refering to Romanians in Moldavia at war with "Ruthenian neighbors". That narrows the Ruthenians in his reference to either Ukraine or Poland, and the islands reinforce Ukraine.
