Gotland, with its merchant "republic" is a fascinating subject. Gotlandic trading posts in the East Baltic area existed already ca. AD 500 -- their material culture was distiguishable from that of the Svear, and so are the archaeological traces of their presence. Periodically they were able to control most of the trade with the east.

Merchants from Gotland are mentioned regularly, as well as Finno-
Ugric people lived around Pskov/Novgorod district. I'll give a more
precise answer in a day - I have to re-check the inscriptions
collection to detect characteristic borrowings etc.

As for other language parameters (phonetics, grammar etc), I'm not
sure I am able to use it to address this issue - I'm not sure about
methodology.
