The etymology of Veronica is usually given as = "True Image",
(Vera Icona) based on the story of the saint who captured Christs
Image on a towel when she washed his face. This seems to have been
linked to the Byzantine Mandylion (used as the bearned iconic image of
Christ), which Wilson claims was in fact the folded Turin Shroud. The
debate on this piece of cloth continues.
