The John Dowson"s Classical Dic. of Hindu Mythology
and Religion mentions this:
PRSHNI: - In The Vedas and Pura:nas, the earth, the
mother of the Maruts. The name us used in the Vedas also for a cow.
Prshni: < *PRK'NI: , usually given as meaning
"spotted".
With e-grade we have *PERK'nNI > ON Fjo"rgyn ,
also the Earth.
Coincidence?
An IE Earth-Goddess?
In many IE mythologies the Earth has a kind of
partner (sometimes a consort, sometimes a brother or a son)
Indians : PR:THVI <=> VARA:HA (Boar-man
Vishnu)
Norse : FJOERGYN <=> FJOERGUNN
Greece : DE:ME:T:ER <=>
POTIDAHON
Roma : TELLUS <=> TELLUMUS
Ireland: DAN <=> DAGDA
Wales: DON <=> MATH
Lithuania : ZEMES MATI <=> ZEMES
PATI
Any IE trait? Any non-IE or pre-IE trait ? Or just
another arbitrary coincidence?
Please send me sugestions...
