The American (Amazon, La Plata) and Asian (Chang Jiang, Ganges and Brahmaputra) river dolphins are very distinct species, and none of them lives in a landlocked saltwater basin like the Caspian. The Caspian porpoises, by contrast, are just ordinary porpoises, not an archaic endemic species. The Caspian is also home to a number of marine fishes, including herring.

I didn't know that. I do know, however, that there are fresh-water porpoises/dolphins in lakes in Central America.

While seals might have used rivers to migrate and even covered short distances over land, there are also porpoises in the Caspian Sea.
