If you search the Cybalist archive, you'll find earlier discussions of the Romani (Gypsy) terms "R(r)om-, Lom-, Dom-". They go back to a Middle Indian caste name d.om(b)- (with a retroflex stop) and have nothing to do with the name Rama, which is much older. It derives from the adjective rama- 'gladdening, satisfying', which in turn is related to the verb(s) ramati, ramna:ti, etc. 'settle, rest, be comfortable; take delight, enjoy'.

The «word» (root?) Rom- seems significantly frequent amongst
some IE
folks, as expressing ideas related with ethnicity.
Roma
The Baltic Romuva
The «Rom», name that some Gypsies give to themselves
Ram, Aryan hero of the Ramayana, which is, significantly, the epic
text describing the Aryan conquest of India.

Any comments?
