What I meant was that a borrowing in the other direction didn't strike me as very likely, especially the name of a ubiquitously common bird. Coot and koet might be inherited from Proto-Low-German or independently formed (in parallel to Welsh cwtair) -- with imitative words, you never know.

Several marine terms in English are from Dutch origin, and a lot of English words are of Low Dutch origin (medieval), so why not coot?
