It is the sign for the star of Venus, or Babylonian Ishtar's star (graphic
representations ~ 2,000BC).
The two sets of four arms or points of the star sign, one behind the other,
refer to the exactly eight years it took for either of Venus's two
appearances (as the Morning star and the Evening star) to return to the same
sign of the zodiac and the same place in that sign.
Ishtar was the fertility goddess as the Evening star and the war goddess as
the Morning star.
Christianity adapted this symbol as the sign of love, that is why you can
see it embroidered on the felon'( vestment)
of the Orthodox archbishops ( I did not check the other dinominations).
Hebrew Astoret (later Greek Astarte) was the queen of heavens, her symbolism
was adapted by Chrisitianity probably to make a smoother religious
transition in Mediterranean. AK
