The WEBSTER explain OE Dene as "level lowlanders", from IE *DHEN- "lowland"

OE Dene (Gen.pl. Deni(g)a [older] or Dena [analogical]) < *dan-i- is of course the same word as "Dane". I've never seen a convincing etymology.
