While casting about trying to find something other than Herodotus on Zalmoxis I found a site that may be of interest to some on the list.

A few excerpts:
*Vinca-Turdas art remains definitely distinct from any other group. More than anything else, the mythical imagery reflects the clear European, not Asian, roots of the Vinca-Turdas culture.
*The refined European culture and society of those times reveal new historic dimensions and a new concept about the beginning of European civilisation, long before the fabulous Minoan Crete was born from it. The Balkan Peninsula and the Danubian plains constitute the real cradle of civilisation in Europe.
*The Minoan culture mirrors the same values, the same symbols, the same artistic accomplishments, and the same glorification of the beauty of life. The imaginative and sophisticated taste and style of the Old Europeans make their culture a worthy parent of the Minoan civilisation.

(She does manage to insert Anatolia between the Balkans and Crete. I don't know the author, but will try to meet her if she is in Bucharest.  She goes on to suggest that similarities between Dacian and Latin may have contributed to the resilience of
Romaneste, a factor I was attributing solely to mass Roman colonization.)
