At the risk of stating the obvious,
Sirius, besides being the brighest star in the sky, is also the main star in the
constellation Canis Major, the Great Dog. Admittedly, it does not look too much
like a dog.
This star 'rises' every 365.25
days, and this 'rising' also co-incided with the usual date of the Nile flood. I
am not sure what is meant by 'rising' in this context.
We call it Syriusz in Polish. Nothing
exciting.
