Thanks, Pjotr, for the enriching of my world of bicycles! And we do have an
obvious German word for omphalos (which I couldn't have recognized to belong
in this line) or bellybutton, too, that's very cognate: Nabel.
And concerning the Lycians: There are several myths and theories relating
them with Crete (e.g.Sarpedon and his lover Miletus, learned guesses about
Liner A etc.). I can imagine there really was intensive contact between the
two, maybe even a larger group of Cretans leaving Crete around the time of
the sea peoples who connected with them. But still there is no proof for
that (although in Miletus all stages of archaeological finds until down to
the Middle Minoan era have been found in the last few years - see the
article on sea peoples by Niemeier I posted last time).
