Dear Bryan,
After taking a look at sānu in Abh (2 occurences) and its ṭīkā glosses, I
find only the meaning: "plateau" (of a mountain).
Abh 607 has "pattho tu sānu nitthiyaṃ." which gives pattho and sānu as
synonyms and that the two can't be of the feminine gender (anitthiyaṃ).
ṭịkā:
Assa yathāvuttassa pabbatassa pattho samo bhūmibhāgo sānu nāma, assa vā
pabbatassa samāya bhūmiyaṃ pattho sānu ca bhavantīti ajjhāharitabbaṃ.
"pabbatassa pattho samo bhūmibhāgo" -- a level area of ground -- makes it
clear that a mountaing plateau is meant.
Patiṭṭhate asminti pattho, ṭhassa tho. The first part (it is situated on it)
is a nibbacana showing the derivation and -th- takes the place of -ṭh-.
Sana sambhattiyaṃ (the root and its meaning), ṇu (the kita affix),
sambhajīyate sevīyateti sānu (the nibbacana), dvepyanitthiyaṃ (both pattho
and sānu are not feminine).
Abh 887:
Padhāne tu ca sānumhi, visāṇe siṅga muccate.
Here, sānu is given as one of three meanings of siṅga. According to the
ṭīkā, this sānu also has the same meaning as at Abh 607.
