There are still some European bison reestablished in national parks; they are not extinct yet (unlike the aurochs). The Romanian word is a loan from Slavic (*zo~brU, somehow related to Lith. stumbras, though the details are unclear). I don't think the Cimbri were "the Bisons", since the Germani had a a different word for the animal: *wisundaz ~ *wisandaz (hence Germ. Wisent and, indirectly, <bison>).

There was a time in Europe where here lived a lot of animals.Today they doesnt exist anymore. One of them was a kind of bison, in latin the name is Bison Bonasus.
I the slavic languages and romanian language this has the forms:
slavic: zonbrU
rom. zimbru  with the plural form zimbri.
