It seems to be appearing more often in advertising typography as a stylish
replacement for [A]. I first noticed it in the logo for the KIA (ΚΙΛ) car.
( I haven't bothered to try to find out whether they have a different
name, or logo, for Greece.) I guess it's like the designation of a
Greek-letter fraternity or sorority.

Of course the Turkish İ has long been a favorite of handwritten block
lettering in the USA, where a significant proportion of the population
either cannot or chooses not to be able to letter our standard language
using block capitals. (I do see hope, however, in Waltham.)
