There is a "museum of writing" in San Miniato, about 30 km from
Florence, on your road from (or to) Rome:

Never visited it personally, however. I suspect it might be somewhat
oriented to elementary school children.

[ About restaurants, I can't think of a particular one. I'd rather
suggest food: in Milan, go for "ossibuchi" (meat and marrow from beef
leg) and, if you dare, "mostarda" (fruits dipped in mustard, often
served with boiled beef or soft cheese). In Florence, don't miss the
famous "fiorentina" (a huge T-bone steak), which has recently been
legalized again after a long ban because of the mad cow disease (the
recipe contains spinal marrow). Roman cuisine is so rich and varied
that you'll find superb restaurants at any street corner... Be sure to
try at least once the Jewish specialties in the Ghetto (near Portico
d'Ottavia); BTW, its a pity you'll have missed for a few weeks both
Hannukkah and Christmas, which is when Roman cuisine reaches its top.
Buon appetito! ]
